Cultivated in the early days of the region’s settlement, Henley Park is wrapped in history, nestled in the Swan Valley, Western Australia. Today, we enjoy 11 acres planted with 6,500 vines, but our story begins more than 100 years ago, in 1895.
Our “founding father” — Honourable Henry John Saunders — built Henley Park from the ground up by cultivating 500 acres of land, including an extensive orchard and a 12-acre vineyard. Saunders was also one of Perth’s first Mayors in 1895, and an experienced politician and businessman who took pride in establishing on of the Swan Valley’s first vineyards. However, Henley Park wasn’t opened as a winery until 1935, when it was purchased by Englishman Jack Hillard.
Henley Park Winery benefits from more than 100 years of winemaking innovation and tradition. The winemaking customs of Henley Park have been passed from owner-to-owner like a secret covenant. Each new owner has imbued Henley Park wines with their own style, while still holding true to the traditions that made us known in the region — and the world — in the early years and modern times.
Although Henley Park Winery looks different today than it did back in 1895, a large number of our Cabernet Sauvignon and the Shiraz vines are from the original planting.
With a passion for good wine, we’ve intentionally kept our team and operations small, so we maintain ultimate control at every part of the winemaking process. From planting to fertilizing, harvesting to bottling and labeling, the wine that goes into every bottle is always a wine we’re proud of.
Whether you’re a sommelier, self-proclaimed connoisseur, or just enjoy the occasional glass, we hope you enjoy drinking our wines as much as we enjoy crafting them.
Lance is winemaker and viticulturist at Henley Park Wines in the Swan Valley. Lance’s interest in farming began on his family’s farm in his early years and travel around the world as a child with his Father’s work. His work in Hospitality began his interaction with wine and pursuit of understanding how flavours transmit from the fruit in to the final wine. This eventually led to him studying a Bachelor of Science in Viticulture and Oenology at Curtin University where he received the Dux accolade.
Lance has over 20 vintages of experience that includes overseas vintages in Portugal, Germany, USA, France and Italy. Having done 15 years at Houghton Wines he is now working 4.5 hectares of vines and the winery at Henley Park Wines. He has judged at Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Perth, Swan Valley, Wine Show of Western Australia and Margaret River Wine Shows. In 2018 he also attended the prestigious Len Evans Tutorial.
Troy grew up in Southwest WA just as the wine industry was emerging. As a young child he helped his Grandparents and Uncle plant vines at their property in Metricup. This would later become Woody Nook Wines where his Uncle was Winemaker for over 30 years.
Although this spiked his interest in wine growing up, it wasn’t until he spent seven months living in the Loire region in France at 21 that an epiphany moment occurred during a dinner there. A an amazing food and wine pairing that led to questioning how can you get these amazing and complex flavours just from a grape?
This eventually led to him studying a Bachelor of Science in Viticulture and Oenology at Curtin University.
Troy has 20 vintages of experience that includes vintages in Margaret River, Swan Valley, Clare Valley (in South Australia) and overseas in Portugal. He has judged at Brisbane, Perth, Wine Show of Western Australia and Swan Valley Wine Shows. Having worked 12 years locally at Houghton Wines in Middle Swan with Lance they are back working as team on the 4.5 hectares of vines and in the winery at Henley Park Wines.
Claus & Lisbet were actually the previous owners of Henley Park Winery, managing operations here from 1993 – 2022. Claus and Lisbet learned the winemaking trade from French winemaker Vincent Desplat and broke into the Danish wine market, making Henley Park Winery a celebrated name in Denmark. Being Danish themselves, this was something Claus and Lisbet were particularly passionate about and proud of.
Claus and Lisbet are the master craftsmans and we’re honoured to have them stay onboard sharing their winemaking expertise and talents with us as they he continues to sow into the future of this much-loved winery.
